The Moustache Files

The views expressed here are entirely from Russ’s moustache. We don’t know yet if it is an evil moustache or a good one. We do know that it has a mind of its own and it’s AWESOME and not creepy like some moustaches. Read on for some interesting viewpoints.

High-Tech Training

We have all heard the expression that a picture is worth a thousand words. When it comes to your training, a video is worth more than that. If you are serious about perfecting your technique with any lift, I would highly recommend you start to record yourself when performing that lift.

Video cameras are a dime a dozen these days, most of us have them built into our phones. If you do not have a cell phone with a camera, you could raise money by selling your Z Cavaricci’s at a vintage clothing store and then reinvesting in one. Bye bye ‘80s!

Ok, now that you have a camera, don’t go “Fruit Loops” and record every single thing you do in the gym. I tried that once and quickly realized that I was an idiot. Remember, Tucan Sam is watching!

Now it’s time to focus. Pick one lift that you want to work on, and start recording. Make sure you get different angles of the lift that you are trying to perfect. Also, film different stages of your training session to isolate breakdowns in form as the weights increase.

Next you need an example of someone that is doing what you want to do, correctly. Thankfully there are thousands of videos of great lifters available online. Unfortunately there are also hundreds of thousands of videos of poor lifters with horrible form. So, to the best of your ability find someone with a similar body type to your own, someone who is doing exactly what you want to do.

Now watch your video of a single lift, that you performed, one of your best. Then watch the video of the other lifter that you chose as your “model.” What are they doing differently?

Next, train, film, compare, study. Day in and day out, you will improve.

These videos will be a journal of your lifts and of your progress! Make sure to date them. You will be amazed at how fast you can improve by staying consistent with this.

If you want to take this a step further I would recommend you download a program called Kineovea. This video analysis software is FREE and can be found here.

In conclusion, using technology to improve your technique will pay off big-time. Most will not take the time to do this. Remember in many cases the successful are willing to do what the unsuccessful will not.

Until next month,

Wishing you the best in your training,
