So you think saving a few bucks on cheap food is worth it?
January is here and getting in shape, eating healthier and a lot of other resolutions are made. I am going to give you some food for thought about eating cheap food and fast food to help you keep your resolutions and also to increase the quality of your life and longevity.
A lot of people do not realize that there is a huge difference in the quality of the food you buy. The food at Whole Foods is of a much higher quality than that at the Price Chopper. Price Chopper and many other stores are cheaper because the food is cheaper (lower quality).
Food is Not What It Used to Be
Our food supply is not the same now as it was 30, 20 or even 10 years ago. Without getting into a huge oratory on how food is produced, grown and processed, I’ll give you some ideas that are easy to digest.
When I was a kid the food supply was much healthier due to the size of the population, the ways it was grown, harvested and processed and a host of other reasons. Over the past few years and decades it has changed drastically. Due to many reasons including a population explosion, profit, engineers “designing” food and more, the quality of our food supply has degraded.
The earth now has more people living on it than any point in history and feeding them is an issue for food producers. I think that when engineers decided to try and come up with better ways to grow food faster, produce more food and have crops yield more they had their hearts in the right place. I also believe that big business saw the value in making more food cheaper and faster. They saw dollar signs. Now anyone who knows me knows I am a business man and have no issues with making a profit. There just has to be some ethics and accountability related to it. Never make a buck without being ethical.
GMOs
This led to genetically engineering crops and trying the same with animals. Genetically engineered crops are GMOs and are known as Genetically Modified Organisms. We are told that GMOs are perfectly safe for human consumption. Personally I do not believe this to be true.
Scientists are screwing around with the DNA of plants and animals. They aren’t even required to test them on humans before introducing them into the food supply.
Now this may sound like conspiracy theory stuff but it is true. The Monsanto Corporation leads the way in GMOs and is possibly the most evil company on the planet. Think of the bad corporations you see in movies and multiply it by a thousand. Monsanto introduced GMOs in the 90s in soy. They created Roundup-resistant crops (soy) and unleashed them into the food supply. Roundup is a pesticide and their seeds are resistant to it. This may not seem like much to you but it is a big problem. They expanded the Roundup resistant crops to corn, canola, wheat and more. Think about that – corn and wheat are everywhere and are staples in the American diet. It is almost impossible to find non-GMO foods, unless of course you buy organic.
Monsanto pretty much controls all of the seeds commercially available and is like the mafia when it comes to sales and distribution. You can read about this with a simple Google search if you like. Beware, it is terrifying and may take up hours of your time once you start reading. Anyway, back on track, their use of GMOs has spread to pretty much every type of seed available and it is virtually impossible to get non GMO fruits and vegetables in the USA.
Think about this: GMOs are or were banned for human consumption in most of Europe due to their potential effects on our bodies. Many countries lifted the ban and then enacted it again! Since big business is so entrenched in our economy and politics in America, Monsanto gets away with whatever they want. They can literally do anything they want to the DNA of seeds and not test it and release it on the population.
Antibiotics & Hormones
Antibiotics and hormones in meats and dairy is another issue. The meat you eat, the milk you drink and the cheese you eat is riddled with hormones and antibiotics for profit-driven reasons. Hormones are added to the milk and meat producing animals to give them a higher yield. Antibiotics are given because they are kept in unsanitary conditions and get sick, a lot.
You can’t buy steroids over the counter in this country because the government says they will kill you or turn you into a raging homicidal beast. You can buy meat, milk and cheese with very chemically similar compounds in them and eat them to your heart’s content. Now I am not saying that you should be able to buy steroids, but I AM saying that if steroids are as bad as the government says, why are they allowing them to be put in the food supply? You think I am making this up?
Consider this:
Bodybuilders have been using a drug called Finaplix for years. It is a VERY harsh steroid that makes you really strong, causes incredible mood swings and amplifies your personality. What I mean by that is that if you are an asshole, you are a REAL asshole on Fina. If you are aggressive, you are REALLY aggressive on Fina.
Guess where Finaplix comes from? Veterinary supply houses. Finaplix is a pellet they shoot into cattle to make them grow bigger muscles therefore yielding more meat. The bodybuilders figured out a way to get the pellets, extract the drug and inject it. This is 100% true and NOT conspiracy theory. Guys got huge and strong from injecting the chemicals made so that cows can make more meat. All the while our congress that allows this as they grill baseball players about steroid use. They never say a word to the dairy and meat producers for poisoning our food supply.
Why?
There are many more steroids or steroid like compounds in our foods, Fina is just one example.
So Has Any of This Made Us Healthier?
So let’s look at the issues arising from cheap food: the obesity rate has skyrocketed, cancer is at an all-time high, there are more food allergies than you can shake a stick at, and gluten allergies are abundant. That is a short list of issues, there are many more. All of these can be explained by several reasons and the food industry will not even consider that GMOs, hormones and antibiotics are among them.
The rate of food allergies such as peanuts, gluten allergies and more has skyrocketed since the 90s when GMOs became abundant in the food supply. If you are over 40, how many kids did you know growing up that were allergic to peanuts? Maybe one? Look at your child’s school. How many kids have nut allergies there? More than one, more than ten, more than twenty? Probably. Why? My opinion and the opinion of many is GMOs. At least partly.
Our diet has shifted to a heavily processed, carbohydrate-rich one over the past 25 or 30 years and diabetes is everywhere. People live on shit in boxes made out of shit ingredients and lots of chemicals. It is cheap, calorically dense, sodium-laden, filled with chemicals you can’t spell or pronounce the names of and will slowly kill you. Why? PROFIT.
I can go on and on about this for weeks if you let me, but I think you are getting the point. Here are a few bullet points about the cost of cheap food:
- Increased risk of diabetes
- Increased risk of coronary disease
- Increased risk of cancer
- Increased risk of obesity (which causes a lot of the above issues)
- Impaired nervous system function
- Much more
What Can We Do About It?
Cheap food ends up costing a lot in the long run as far as the quality of your life goes. How do you combat this? Well, it’s not easy but it is possible. The best way is to consume ONLY grass-fed meats and dairy and organic vegetables and produce.
Doing so 100% is is out of reach for many. A good way to start is to stop buying packaged foods and fast foods (which are loaded with GMOs, chemicals, soy and more stuff you should not eat). Buy as much organic food as you can and eat it. Do some research and find out what stores sell meat with pink slime. Pink slime is really gross and you can find out what it is with a search on the Google machine. Look it up.
Go to Whole Paycheck or Trader Joe’s and buy the store brand of peanut butter and vegetables. They are not 100% organic, but they are GMO-free. It’s not that much more than regular supermarkets but it is a lot better for you in the long term.
Try and eat more protein and if possible get grass fed meat or at least get it at Trader Joe’s and Whole Paycheck. Costco is also a fairly good source of non-pink slime meats.
As I said earlier, simply avoiding anything in a box or package is a great start. Do a little reading on your own and see what is going on in the world instead of spending for hours on Friendface and Instatweet. A little education and effort will go a long way in your long-term health.
