I am trying to figure out my diet for the next few months and setting some goals. I am 5’5” tall and currently weigh 152lb. In the past, I’ve always tried to cut some weight around the summertime but I just wanted to ask for some advice as I start out the powerlifting program.

Since I am thinking of doing a USAPL meet (I think August/September would be a good goal), I would be between the 145lb and 163lb weight classes. Would it make sense for me to try and cut some weight to 145lb ahead of time? I am keeping the guidelines of high protein (over 155g per day) but thinking of cutting out some calories for the next few months. In the long term, should I aim to stay in one particular weight class?

If you have never done a meet or only one or two, the WORST idea is to try and cut weight.

Just compete at what you weigh.
Beginners ask this a lot and all good coaches say that same thing, do not cut weight.
Cutting weight is for advanced listers.

Simply eat good food and make sure you are getting at least 1 gram of high quality protein from food and let your body change as it does for now.

Let me know if you have more questions on this.

Also, long term, you should start adding muscle and your weight may go up from the training.
As long as you are not getting fat, don’t worry about the weight for now.
