I had a pretty bad disc injury about a year back now due to deadlifting with this same bad habit in the video. I had two phyical therapy stints but I really want to get back into deads. My recurring issue is I tend to lose my hips around the start of the deadlift causing me to essentially good morning the weight off the floor. Any cues or tips? I have heard to try to point the toes out more but any other tips would be great prior to me being dumb and injuring myself again.

It’s not just your hips, everything is loose.

Take your time on the set up and make sure that your make your arms long and keep rooting!

      Learn patience.

Did you watch the deadlift course?

I also think that your hips need to be higher and at a consistent height for each rep.

Take your time, be patient and don’t get frustrated.

Thanks Murph- I took your advice and watched the beginner deadlift video. I made some adjustments and realized I wasnt feeling enough activation in my glutes/hams prior to starting the lift. I do still notice some flaws- specifically, my ass seems to raise up prior to the bar breaking the floor. Any tips you could recommend to correct this?

Your butt sin’t really shooting up too bad.
I would suggest starting with your hips higher.

That should improve things a lot.

Ive been working on my form and taking your advice trying to start with my hips higher. I do feel like my ass shoots up maybe too soon and with my hips higher I feel like my back is more parallel to the ground rather than upright at the start. Is this looking better than before?

      Trevor,

It does look better and you can see that you are working at it.
Keep trying to make the arms long!

      Try this cue:

Squeeze your triceps into your armpits.

Great job documenting your progress. You’re doing a much better job keeping the feet tight and intentionally activating the glutes off the floor. I agree with Murph about starting with a higher hip. Right now your hips are starting at A (starting position), moving to B (where your hips should be starting), then locking out at C (Lockout) , instead we want your hips to go directly from A (starting position) to B (Lockout) Starting your hips higher will help this. Next time you’re DL grab one of us.
