It does look like that first position gets your check higher and thus shortens the range of motion. It is a trade off because a lot of that arch is coming from your lower back, and with that thing occasionally acting up we don’t want to stress it anymore than we already do with the squats/deadlifts. The last thing you want in a meet it a lower back that too fried from benching to be able to pull.
