      Hey,

I normally have no pain issues while benching, but this week, bench was programmed for 6×2 @90%. My warm up was fine, and then on my first working set, I had this pain in my elbow on the eccentric. Finished the set, and then couldn’t do another set without pain. Pain persisted when I tried to do DB bench instead, and incline push ups. I let it rest for a few days and it was totally fine (or I thought) and then today I tried to do the same rep scheme, and worked up to my working set fine, no pain. The first working set gave me pain again on the eccentric.

I’m not sure if you’d have any idea what this is from. It seems to be between two bones in my elbow, maybe a tendon, and the pain can radiate up my arm a couple inches also. I’m icing it a few times a day and just will back off any pressing movements again, but I’d hate for this to keep happening when I try to go heavy.

      Thanks!!

As we are not Doctors, we cannot diagnose injures, but we CAN make suggestions to help.
If this is new and it goes away in a few days, or decreases, it is probably not a big issue.
If it has been here, that is a different story.

      Do you have video?
      Seeing your bench will help.

In the mean time, read this:

It’s new in the sense that the first time it happened was a week ago, but since I’ve tried benching again from that first day, it’s happened again. If I do overhead presses or shoulder stuff, it’s fine. Only from that bench press type movement.

I uploaded the video here of the first time it happened, but it’s my right elbow, so not sure this video will help much. Also, if this link doesn’t work, I’ll try to figure out another way to post it. The embed thing doesn’t work :/

Thanks for the response, and the link to the article, I’ll definitely try some of those things out!!

Is this your normal technique or is it changed?

It changed a little bit after I came to the TPS bench seminar a few weeks ago, but not too much. Besides using my legs and driving out instead of forward, and trying to get my shoulders/back set before I unrack the bar, everything is pretty similar.

Try the exercises in the article and see if they help.
If floor pressing does not bother it you can also do those for a few weeks to keep benches in the program while it heals up.
