I think I may have tweaked my AC joint training jiu jitsu so certain upper body exercises are a bit more painful than usual. I don’t think anything’s torn as I essentially have full mobility, just discomfort in some positions. I’ve been taking the week off in favor of some light stretches and rehab with ice and ibuprofen.

I’m currently on Week 3 of Block 3B. Before I took time off, I was able to do perform the Day 1 squat routine with no issues but I’m erring to the side of caution and postponing Day 2 and 3 in favor of rehab. My plan is to get back in the gym next week and start Week 3 over again. My question for the team is how should I train around this injury (especially for my bench day)? Should I lower the RPE? Perform different exercises in place of the bench? How should I proceed with training if my shoulder isn’t getting any better or (God forbid) gets worse?

Let me know your thoughts and thanks again!

      Joe

Joe, we are not Doctors or PTs so we cannot give you medical advice. I strongly recommend talking to someone if it does not seem to be getting better. Since you are in the area, Murph has a great network of people with letters after their names that can help in situations like this.
Suggestions for training. Even if squatting feels fine I’d switch all bars out for SSB temporary just to put less pressure on the joint. In that same vein, drop all pressing, and if you are going to do pressing, stick with dumbells.
You can keep in rowing movements and isolated tricep/bicep stuff as well.

For example in week 3 I’d make the following changes.
Day 1 SSB squat, drop TGU and do a deadbug or other static ab variation
Day 2 drop Bench, Try Flat DB press instead of decline, shut it down if any pain. The rows and planks should be fine.
Day 3 Maybe switch out ab wheel based on feel
Day 4 replace push ups with a tricep push down

In addition to what Matt said, for pressing, feel free to use the uninjured side and press away.
      Keep training the good arm!

I can refer you out to someone local if you like.

      Let me know.

I actually live in San Diego now. Dave DePew sends his regards.

Do you train at his gym?

Give him a sloppy wet kiss from me.
